Albon pinpoints F1 tracks that 'suit' Williams after early-season promise

Alex Albon has targeted the circuit characteristics that will suit Williams in their quest for F1 points this season.

The Grove-based outfit has made an impressive start to the new campaign as it fights back from a lacklustre effort last year, with Albon securing a point in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Despite signs of pace in Saudi Arabia and Australia, the Thai-British driver has failed to add to his tally whilst rookie teammate Logan Sargeant has struggled to pair promising pace with consistency.

Albon was running well at Albert Park having qualified in the top 10, only to crash out early in the race in an accident Team Principal James Vowles explained was triggered by a chain reaction of events.

Addressing the strong pace shown by the Williams FW45 across the opening three events of the year, Albon pointed to specific conditions that suited his machinery.

Williams 'not your normal F1 car'

"Low deg, low energy tracks suit us because we are a little bit skinnier on the downforce side, we slide around more," Albon told Sky Sports F1.

"We create a bit more surface temperature than other cars.

"That's why you know actually in Bahrain we were okay because it was a night race, Jeddah, we were ok on race pace - it was night race. [In Australia, it] is just naturally cold.

"We were allowed to slide and the circuit is a bit forgiving. There are long straights after the corners which cool the tyres back down - it suits us."

Albon missed out on the Italian Grand Prix last season after being struck by appendicitis, with now-AlphaTauri driver Nyck de Vries stepping in and taking points in Williams' best event of the season.

Suggesting Monza will again be a highlight this term, Albon explained: "We're not your normal F1 car.

"We are very efficient when we remove downforce. So we know we're going to be good at tracks like Monza."
