WATCH: New footage shows dramatic last lap Vettel vs Alonso battle

In the glare of Max Verstappen winning the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship in bizarre fashion at the Japanese Grand Prix, the TV cameras missed some thrilling last lap action.

As replays of the Charles Leclerc vs Sergio Perez incident was being played, Fernando Alonso was caring chunks of time out of old rival Sebastian Vettel.

Alonso had pitted the Alpine for fresh Intermediates with 10 minutes to go at Suzuka, and quickly set about recovering his position - including passing George Russell on the final lap at Turn 1.

Vettel was about 2.5s up the road on the final tour - but approaching the final chicane - the scene of the infamous 1989 collision between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost - the modern day multiple World Champions showed their elders how to do it.

In the end, Vettel beat Alonso across the line by 0.011s...
