Perez: It's my job to help Verstappen win the championship

Sergio Perez says he is understanding of the fact that his job right now is to help Max Verstappen to win the 2021 F1 World Championship.

The Mexican has seen an improvement in his form at Red Bull recently, having achieved three consecutive podium finishes, and ultimately hopes to be regularly challenging for victories.

However, Perez knows that his current focus is on being a team player and supporting Verstappen.

"I think it's my job for now," Perez told Sky Sports. "To try to help Max [and] support Max as a good team player.

"It's in the interests of everybody to make sure we secure both championships. That will be an ideal result for me."

Aiming for improvement

Following his recent progression, Perez hopes to continue to build on this going forwards and is aiming to particularly improve his performance in qualifying during the last four Grands Prix of the 2021 season.

"I think we are working at a good level now," the two-time race winner explained. "But I look forward to do[ing] another step in these final four races.

"[I want] to try to deliver more in qualifying, [and] deliver more in the race, and do the next step, to be in the mix for the win and for pole position. That would be great."

Racing in Brazil

The next event on the calendar is the Brazilian Grand Prix, and Perez is looking forward to racing in front of the passionate local fans.

"It's great. The atmosphere here is very special, very unique," he said.

"We have so many fans [and] so much support, so it's just very enjoyable to be here."

In terms of the championship heading into the weekend in Sao Paulo, Verstappen has a 19-point lead at the top of the standings ahead of Lewis Hamilton, whilst Red Bull are only one point behind Mercedes in the Constructors' battle.
