Magnussen calls for changes to Sprint weekend format

Kevin Magnussen has suggested some changes that he believes would improve the format of the F1 Sprint.

The Haas driver took part in the shortened race for the first time at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and claimed the final point on offer by finishing in P8.

Magnussen has since offered his thoughts on the Sprint, and admits that he is not entirely sure about certain aspects of the weekend schedule.

"It's a busy weekend," Magnussen told media, including RacingNews365.com, following the Imola event.

"But, apart from that, it's nice. There's a lot of pressure. There could be some tweaks.

"I don't know if I agree with the parc ferme after [Free Practice 1]. Basically, you have between FP1 and qualifying, then you're not working on the car anymore, and that's a little tough for the smaller teams especially.

"I think they could also tweak making qualifying [on Friday] the qualification for the starting grid on Sunday. Then you'd fight a little harder, and take a bit more risk."

Magnussen reflects on what he got "wrong" in Sprint

Magnussen started the Sprint from fourth on the grid, but found himself being overtaken in the early stages of the race.

Having opted to run the Hard tyre, the Dane admits that he was surprised to see many drivers around him using the Soft compound, and feels that he made the wrong call in this respect.

"We didn't do a whole Sprint race distance in practice on that [Soft] tyre," Magnussen explained.

"But we did like 13 laps [on it], and I saw it took a step [towards] degradation. I judged that it would continue, but it looked on everyone else that, after Lap 13, it was kind of the same.

"[It] took a little step, but then it stayed there, and they were kind of the same pace as me, so [the] Soft tyre was the right tyre.

"I got that wrong, but we live to fight another day."
