Ex-F1 driver backs Hulkenberg to win at 'top team'

Nico Hulkenberg took part in his 200th race start at the Mexican Grand Prix, continuing a difficult campaign thus far with Haas. Ex-Formula 1 driver Timo Glock believes the German would become a race winner if he was handed a drive at a front-running outfit.

Ex-Formula 1 driver Timo Glock has backed Nico Hulkenberg to score podiums and race victories should he be handed a front-running drive in the sport.

Hulkenberg returned to the F1 grid this year with Haas after two years on the sidelines but the American outfit has largely struggled with its car in race trim.

Hulkenberg will remain with Haas for next season and completed his 200th race in F1 last time out in Mexico City.

The 36-year-old was running inside the points until late in the race but ultimately dropped out of the top 10 with Glock placing blame on the Haas VF-23 package.

“Nico Hulkenberg drove a super 200th race,” Glock wrote in his column for Sky Sports Germany.

“He fought like a lion and tried everything to get that last point. Unfortunately, the package doesn't allow it.

“Driver-wise, he did everything right. He had to go a few per cent over the limit. But then the car put too much strain on the tyres.

“In the end, his opponents got the upper hand. He actually does everything right, but just doesn't have the material to turn it into results.”

Glock has faith in Hulkenberg

Despite having a lengthy career in F1, Hulkenberg has never stood on the podium.

The German has largely competed for midfield teams but has had a handful of opportunities to seal a top-three finish slip thorugh his grasp during his time in the sport.

Should he be handed a top drive in the future, Glock has backed his compatriot to succeed in the position.

“Looking ahead to next year, it's up to Haas to provide Hulkenberg with a better car than this year - especially in the race,” said Glock.

“We don't need to discuss his performance in qualifying. It is outstanding.

“Of course, with performances like that, he always gets himself talked about by top teams.

“If Hulkenberg would drive in a top team, he is also someone who can fight for the podium and for victories.”
