Russian GP will not go ahead 'in the current circumstances'

Formula 1 have suspended this year's Grand Prix in Russia, after Russian forces launched a major military assault on neighbouring Ukraine.

There has been pressure growing on sporting organisations to boycott Russia following the invasion.

Russia was set to stage a number of major events in 2022, including the Champions League Final and the Russian Grand Prix. On Thursday morning, UEFA made the call to move the Champions League Final to Paris, setting a clear precedent.

F1 issue statement over Russian GP

Now F1 have followed suit, taking the decision to suspend the 2022 Russian Grand Prix, set to be staged at the Sochi Autodrom.

"The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together," read a short statement from F1.

"We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation.

"On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances."

F1 already eyeing potential replacement

The suspension of the Russian Grand Prix has left F1 with a gap in the planned 23-race 2022 calendar.

The event was scheduled to be staged on 25 September, between the Italian Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix.

F1 are already eyeing a potential replacement, with a list of circuits on their shortlist, RacingNews365.com understands.

Istanbul Park (Turkey), the Sepang International Circuit (Malaysia) and the Shanghai International Circuit (China) are all believed to be potential destinations for 2022's 17th round.
