Spectacle at Silverstone

Formula 1 circus returned to Great Britain for the tenth round of the championship. The weekend took place from July 5 to 7, 2023.

Qualification in the United Kingdom

Just like in the three race weekends before, the British Grand Prix weekend was partly plagued by rain. The drivers started their fast laps on a drying track. One team was consistently fast: McLaren. This had nothing to do with the track conditions, but with the well-functioning upgrades that the team had implemented. Oscar Piastri qualified third, Lando Norris came second. The man on pole position? Max Verstappen.

Local hero Lando Norris set Silverstone on fire by overtaking Verstappen at the start. The Dutchman couldn't immediately reclaim his position, as he had to defend fiercely against Norris' teammate Piastri. Norris led the race for a few laps, but had to concede the lead to Verstappen after a while. The Limburger in his Red Bull was just a bit too strong for the Brit.

Behind the top three, there was a fierce fight for points. Charles Leclerc was chased for a long time by George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton was knocking at Fernando Alonso's door. After a while, there was peace in the field. Verstappen increased the gap to Norris, while the first drivers headed into the pit lane for a tyre change.

Safety car

In the midst of the race, the engine of Kevin Magnussen's Haas car failed, neutralising the race with a safety car. Many drivers were able to take advantage, while some others got the short end of the stick. This applied to Oscar Piastri, who had just made his pit stop. The Australian fell back to fourth place, behind Verstappen, Norris, and Hamilton.

After the restart, Verstappen drove unchallenged to victory. Norris fought with Hamilton for second place and was able to hold his position. Hamilton finished third, Piastri took the fourth spot. Nyck de Vries was the tail ender of the British Grand Prix, which later turned out to be his last race for AlphaTauri.
